Funeral

There are a lot of differences between traditional customs and religious views in Japan and those overseas. I was particularly interested in differences in funeral conventions. Also, I was surprised how differently the Japanese think about “death” from overseas people.
For example, in a typical American funeral, instead of hearing crying from the attendees, laughter occurs in places, and memorial remarks include a fun episode of the deceased’s life. And sometimes it even looks like a celebration party. I saw this kind of scene in a TV documentary, and it felt like a “warm time” was flowing, with a lot of humor and a smile. Contrary to that, “death” is still taboo in Japan and China. So you should avoid the number 4 on mobile phone numbers, car numbers, and floors where you live. That is because it is nearly homophonous to the word “death.”
That is why the clothes of the attendees in a funeral in Japan should be absolute black, the color of condolence. In addition, you should not wear glittering metal. Also, you should not show your skin as much as possible. Finally, you should wear a skirt that is longer than your knees. Rings are not allowed except for wedding rings. Commonly, women should wear pearls instead of jewelry.
However, I wondered if I could make a work that would dispel the common sense of Japanese “funeral” clothing, so I made this work called “Funeral.” “Is” black “the color you wear only when you pray to the dead?” This was the theme, and I had to be challenged by this work.

The Japanese tend to feel sad because they are customarily conscious of “death.” In my opinion, the perspective is too pessimistic. We cherish that perspective about “death,” but I strongly want to emphasize the future side of death, not the past side.
I expressed that feeling in the styling and direction.

I was in charge of direction and styling. I am grateful to the team and clothing brands for their cooperation.
